Personnage biblique (en hébreu, râchel : «brebis mère»; cf. Gen., XXXI, 38) qui, dans l’histoire des Patriarches, est la fille de l’Araméen Laban et la femme préférée de Jacob (Gen., XXIX, 6-30). Elle est la mère de Joseph (Gen., XXX, 22-24) et de Benjamin (XXXV, 16-18). Elle mourut en mettant au monde ce dernier et fut enterrée «sur le chemin d’Éphrata».

Jérémie (XXXI, 15-20) évoque poétiquement la mémoire de Rachel: mère éponyme d’Éphraïm et Manassé (fils de Joseph), elle est imaginée encore vivante près de sa tombe; elle pleure sur ses enfants, massacrés ou dispersés par les Assyriens environ un siècle auparavant, en \RACHEL 721. Le premier verset de ce texte est inséré dans le récit évangélique du massacre des enfants de Bethléem par Hérode (Matth., II, 18). La tradition qui plaçait près de Bethléem le tombeau de Rachel (en Gen., XXXV, 19, une glose erronée a déjà introduit cette localisation fautive) n’est pas étrangère à ce réemploi de l’oracle de Jérémie dans le récit de l’«Enfance» de Jésus, qu’une croyance précoce faisait naître à Bethléem (Matth., II, 1).
